In south Kashmir’s Qazigund, the father of a youth who has been detained by the police has reportedly attempted suicide, leading the PDP chief to warn that alleged “heavy-handedness” on the ground “only deepens wounds and breeds despair.”
Bilal Ahmad Wani, a dry-fruit seller from Wanpora Qazigund, attempted to set himself ablaze and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after his son Jasir Bilal and brother Naveel Wani were detained by the police a few days ago.
He and his son are neighbours of Dr Adeel Rather, who was arrested in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with a suspected terror module. Adeel’s brother, Dr Muzaffar, is reportedly absconding.
Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti posted on X that Wani, “Petrified about their safety, he pleaded with the authorities just to see them, but this was denied. He has been referred to SMHS Srinagar and is in critical condition,” she wrote, uploading a photograph showing the father with extensive burns.
Mehbooba warned that “this level of high-handedness only deepens wounds and breeds despair,” adding that “when young men are picked up randomly, we risk driving an entire generation into fear, frustration, and ultimately towards darker paths.” She appealed to the Jammu & Kashmir Police to allow the family to meet the detained members.
