There has been an increase in attacks by Hindu right-wing organisations on Kashmiri vendors in different parts of the country, raising concerns about the well-being of community members who travel for work.
In two separate incidents, shawl vendors were harassed and thrashed by Hindutva groups in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
The incidents come just days after a shawl vendor from Kashmir was harassed and assaulted by Bajrang Dal members in Uttarakhand.
The first incident took place in Dehra, located in Kangra district. According to the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, the man, identified as Jehangir Ahmad, was “mercilessly thrashed by fringe elements in Dehra”.
Ahmad is said to have sustained fractures and multiple injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Himachal Pradesh.
“This is the 16th case this year in HP involving the targeting of Kashmiri shawl sellers,” the student association said.
