Kerala cabinet minister Saji Cherian came under fire after stating that the politics of the Muslim League promotes communalism and that examining the names of those who won in Malappuram and Kasaragod would reveal whether communal polarisation exists.
The remark, which many critics said echoed Hindutva rhetoric, prompted Congress leader Anoop VR to file a complaint against the minister at Chengannur Police Station.
“The politics of the Muslim League spreads communalism, and one only needs to look at the names of those who won in Malappuram and Kasaragod to understand whether communal polarisation exists. One should not assume such things will go unnoticed,” Saji Cherian said.
Targeting the Opposition Leader V D Satheesan, the minister alleged that Satheesan was attempting to secure votes by undermining communal harmony, and claimed that it was the Congress that was fostering communalism in Kerala.
Cherian also said there was no need to see any controversy in Vellappally Natesan, who has been accused of repeatedly delivering hate speeches against Muslims, travelling in the Chief Minister’s car. He asked whether the Chief Minister was expected to step out of the vehicle when an elderly person got in.
