In yet another alarming incident of targeted violence in Bihar, a Muslim daily wage labourer, Mohammad Murshid Alam from Supaul district, narrowly escaped death after being brutally assaulted by a mob of nearly 50 people in Madhubani district on New Year’s Day.
Murshid, who had travelled to Madhubani seeking work, was surrounded while buying goods from a shop. The attackers branded him a “Bangladeshi” and escalated the violence upon learning his name and Muslim identity.
He recounted being chased for three kilometres, beaten severely, and threatened with sacrificial killing at a Kali temple. The mob allegedly dumped him in a deserted area, leaving him unconscious and critically injured.
Rescued by locals, Murshid is now battling for life in hospital with serious injuries. Police have registered an FIR at Rajnagar station and are investigating, promising action against the culprits.
The attack has heightened tensions in the area, with Muslim residents expressing fear over growing insecurity. Locals described it as inhuman, warning that such suspicion-based assaults threaten anyone.
AIMIM spokesperson Adil Hasan condemned the incident as an assault on humanity and a law-and-order failure, demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment.
Activists highlight a disturbing pattern, noting at least three major mob attacks on Muslims in Bihar in 2025, primarily in Nawada district.
These include the fatal beating of hawker Mohammad Athar Hussain in December after his religion was confirmed, and the earlier killing of Altaf Ansari following a minor collision.
Community leaders stress that these incidents follow a similar script of labelling Muslims as outsiders before mob violence, urging swift state intervention to prevent further loss of life. — With Agencies Inputs
