The demolition of Masjid-e-Maulana in Telangana’s Sangareddy district has sparked widespread outrage among political parties, community leaders, and human rights groups, who have questioned both the legality and timing of the action.
Revenue officials razed the mosque in Sadasivpet, claiming it was illegally constructed on government-classified “Inam land”. The demolition occurred shortly after prayers began in the newly built structure, coinciding with the start of Ramadan, intensifying accusations of insensitivity.
Local sources report that the mosque had only recently been completed, with prayers commencing earlier that week. The Revenue Department acted swiftly, asserting that private structures on such land violate regulations, as “Inam land” falls under government or special-category control.
Community members criticized the lack of prior notice. One resident remarked, “If there was a legal issue, authorities should have issued warnings and allowed court proceedings. Demolishing a mosque during Ramadan deeply wounds religious sentiments.”
Land claimant Mohammed Kaleem stated he legally purchased Survey Number 165 two years ago from a Hyderabad resident named Raju. He had possessed the plot since then, even installing a borewell without objection. “We faced harassment from certain elements from the beginning,” he said, adding that the mosque was built peacefully for prayer.
AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the move, questioning why action was delayed for two years until after construction and prayers started. He directed party leaders to engage local officials and highlighted the borewell installation as evidence of unchallenged possession.
AIMIM and Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) alleged procedural violations, demanding the suspension of the Sangareddy RDO and Sadasivpet MRO, criminal charges against those responsible, and mosque reconstruction at the site. An MBT representative warned that such opaque actions breed fear among minorities.
