A Muslim teacher from Varanasi has alleged religious discrimination and pressure to remove her hijab at a private school if she wanted to continue her job.

Samreen Bano, a teacher based in Varanasi, shared a series of videos on social media in which she claimed that she repeatedly faced rejection from schools and tuition opportunities after employers learned she was Muslim.

In a later video uploaded on May 9, she alleged that the management of Buddha Public School asked her either to remove her hijab while teaching or leave her job.

The videos have since circulated widely across social media platforms, drawing support from many users while also triggering polarised reactions.

In one of her earlier videos, posted on April 22, Bano spoke emotionally about what she described as growing hostility towards Muslim teachers in India.

“Aaj kal ke daur me nai Muslim teacher ko grow hona bohot mushkil hai. Pata nahi kyun har jagah ye nafrath feli ki apne bacche ko Muslim teacher se nahi padhainge (In today’s times, it is extremely difficult for a new Muslim teacher to grow professionally. I don’t know why this hatred has spread everywhere that people say they will not let their children study under a Muslim teacher),” she said in a video that surfaced on social media platforms.
