“Police collude with Hindutva groups”: Christian body writes to Amit Shah over rising violence (Maktoob Media)

By Maktoob Staff

Amid a rise in hate crimes against Christians, the United Christian Forum (UCF) wrote an urgent letter on Tuesday  to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, warning of what it described as an alarming escalation in targeted violence and hostility against the Christian community across India and alleging that police often “collude with Hindutva groups and turn a blind eye to offences committed against Christians.”

The forum said it recorded a total of 834 incidents of violence against Christians in 2024” and 706 incidents up to November 2025, calling the trend “deeply disturbing.”

According to the letter by UCF National Coordinator A. C. Michael, the primary trigger for these attacks has been “false allegations of forced or fraudulent religious conversions,” with Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh emerging as the most affected states.

Citing reports by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), the forum alleged that police often “collude with Hindutva groups and turn a blind eye to offences committed against Christians,” while prayer meetings are disrupted and worshippers intimidated.

The letter highlighted severe burial-related violence in tribal regions, stating that Christians are “routinely denied burial space, forcibly exhumed, and threatened with violence and ghar wapsi.”

Referring to multiple incidents across Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand, the forum said these acts have created “an environment of fear rather than dignity.”

The UCF strongly criticised anti-conversion laws enforced in several states, arguing that they are being used “to target religious minorities and undermine constitutional rights to freedom of religion, equality, and conscience.”

It pointed to Supreme Court observations that “peaceful religious meetings, Bible preaching, and charity work do not amount to unlawful conversion,” warning that continued prosecutions amount to “an abuse of the criminal process.”
