NEW DELHI — In a case of blatant Islamophobia and an attack on the personal liberty of an individual, a Muslim intern at a women’s hospital was asked to discard her hijab on duty.
The incident occurred recently in the Rajasthan city of Tonk and has gone viral on social media. The video shows a lady doctor objecting to the hijab and asking the intern to remove it, citing the weird notion of safety of patients.
In the video, reportedly recorded by the student named Umama herself, the intern is seen insisting on wearing the hijab, calling it a matter of religious faith. It also shows senior doctor, Bindu Gupta, asking her not to wear it during duty hours, citing safety concerns and the need for a visible face.
Dr Gupta is heard telling the intern: “Your face must remain visible during duty. If you administer the wrong injection and the patient suffers a reaction, how will we know who gave it?”
However, the intern responds by asserting that she will show her face when reporting for duty but insists that the hijab is linked to her faith.
The student further says that patients have never objected to her wearing the hijab. To this, the doctor replies, “We will object. If you administer the wrong injection and the patient suffers a reaction, how will we know who gave it?”
According to reports, Umama has been doing an Unani internship at the hospital for a month. Her duties are in the labour room. Three days ago, she had raised a complaint about the objection to wearing hijab. At that time, Dr Gupta was reportedly counselled, but the issue resurfaced on Saturday.
