NEW DELHI – Members of Hindu and Muslim communities gathered for a ‘Sarv Dharm Shanti Sabha’ (Peaceful Assembly of All Religions) on Wednesday to protest demolitions following administrative actions against several mosques in Barmer district, Rajasthan.
A large number of people assembled outside the Barmer District Magistrate’s office, carrying posters advocating communal harmony. Slogans included “Humanity is the biggest religion,” “Let’s Come and Unite to Protect Syncretic Culture,” “Leave Hatred, Promote Love,” and “Our Identity is Brotherhood and Humanity.”
The assembly was organized amid growing outrage over the demolition of four mosques and the issuance of notices to several others. Organizers stated that the protest was directed against the removal of alleged encroachments at religious sites in the India-Pakistan border region.
Participants from across the district, including social organizations, religious leaders, public representatives, and community elders, attended the gathering. Following the assembly, a memorandum was submitted to the District Collector in the name of the President of India, demanding an immediate halt to ongoing actions in the border area, adherence to Supreme Court directives, and the preservation of social harmony.
Speaking to The Hindustan Gazette, Azad Singh Rathore, one of the organizers, questioned the government’s approach, pointing out that land identification in the border region remains deeply problematic.
“Almost 99% of areas are unidentified land. The government is adopting a pick-and-choose policy by removing the houses of a particular community while leaving others. This was the main issue. We are demanding that all those houses not located in residential areas should be regularized,” he said.
Rathore further stated that the cases related to the mosques that received notices should be heard and regularized if provisions exist. He emphasized that the matter is not limited to mosques and temples but also affects residential houses. “All of them will be rendered homeless,” he warned.
