Christian leaders in India are alarmed at the latest findings of a New Delhi-based ecumenical body that more than two Christians are attacked each day in the country.

The United Christian Forum (UCF) in a June 18 press statement said it has recorded 313 incidents through its toll-free helpline number and other contacts this year till May.

The UCF said attacks on more than two Christians have been observed over the past two years. It recorded 834 incidents in 2024 and 734 in 2023, as opposed to 601 in 2022.

“If this trend is not stopped immediately, it will threaten the identity and existence of the Indian Christian community in its motherland,” said A. C. Michael, the UCF’s national convenor.

Michael, a former member of the Delhi Minorities Commission, said Uttar Pradesh in the north and Chhattisgarh in central India have become “hot spots of viral hate, brutal mob violence and rampant social ostracization.”

Chhattisgarh recorded 64 incidents of violence against Christians till May this year, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 58.

In 2024, Uttar Pradesh recorded 209 incidents, the highest in the country, followed by Chhattisgarh with 165.

The total number of incidents reported nationwide was 834 last year, according to UCF.
