BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B L Santhosh on Saturday asserted that the RSS does not require formal registration to establish its legitimacy, stating that the organisation has long operated on the trust of millions of people. He was responding to Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge’s demand that the RSS be registered.
Speaking at an ‘Akhand Bharat Sankalp Day’ programme organised by the Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Santhosh recalled that the RSS remained unregistered even during Partition, when it stood by Hindus. “Registration does not determine its existence; it is an organisation working through the trust of millions of people,” he said.
He argued that India’s Independence was won through the sacrifices of revolutionaries and soldiers rather than solely through symbolic campaigns like the Salt Satyagraha or spinning the charkha. Naming figures such as Madan Lal Dhingra, Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, he stressed that freedom was earned through struggle and was not a gift from the British.
Santhosh linked demographic shifts to national identity, claiming that a decline in the Hindu population in any region weakens its sense of belonging to India and fosters anti-national sentiment. He pointed to Bengaluru’s Shivajinagar and Chamarajapet constituencies, where no Hindu candidate from any party has won in two decades, and challenged parties to field such candidates. “Hindus should remain a majority because India must remain India,” he said, attributing the demand for Pakistan to earlier demographic and political mobilisation by the Muslim League.
He further claimed that RSS workers, not police or the Kharge family’s ancestors, confronted the Razakars in Hyderabad, forcing Mallikarjun Kharge’s family to flee to Gulbarga. Santhosh called for a national resolve to realise ‘Akhand Bharat’ as a cultural and nationalist ideal, citing the reunification of Germany and Vietnam and Israel’s efforts as precedents. “Every Indian must resolve that the oldest among us should see Akhand Bharat in their lifetime,” he declared, adding that a stronger India is making its detractors insecure worldwide.
