The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on a plea seeking the takedown of an Islamophobic AI-generated video posted on ‘X’ by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Assam unit, which allegedly suggested that Muslims would take over the state if the party lost the elections.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta passed the order after an application was filed by journalist Qurban Ali and Senior Advocate Anjana Prakash through a PIL seeking action against hate speech and hate crimes across the country.

The application states that the subject video was posted by BJP’s Assam unit on ‘X’ on 15.09.2025. It shows a “grossly false narrative” that Assam would be taken over by Muslims if BJP does not remain in power in the state.

“The video…shows visibly Muslim people (wearing skullcaps and burqas) taking over tea estates, Guwahati airport, Guwahati Accolad, Assam Ranghar, Guwahati Stadium, Rang Ghar, Guwahati town. The video further shows illegal migrants who are visibly Muslim coming into Assam; Muslims acquiring government land; and finally, that the State has 90% Muslim population.”

The video shared on @BJP4Assam ends with the line “choose your vote carefully”, and was allegedly designed to influence voters.

The applicant contends that BJP-Assam is obligated to uphold the secular values enshrined in the Constitution, yet the video circulated from its official handle “openly targets, vilifies, and demonizes Muslims.”

According to the application filed through AoR Zafeer Ahmad, “the broad message of the video is that the worst fate a state can face is its takeover by Muslims, and on the assurance that if the BJP is voted into power the state would be saved from this, support is being sought.”

The applicant seeks the takedown of the video to prevent communal disharmony, unrest, and enmity.

Earlier, the Assam Congress on Thursday filed a complaint against the state BJP over an AI-generated video shared on its official social media handle that targeted Congress leaders and depicted the Muslim community as illegal immigrants seizing government land.
