During the ongoing Ram Katha organised at Victoria Park in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Jagadguru Swami Rambhasracharya passed Islamophobic remarks targeting women and the family system in Islam.
The Ram Katha which started on September 8 aims to focus on the spiritual teachings and has sparked controversy after recent speeches involved vitriolic remarks against Muslims.
Swami criticised marriage customs in Islam and alleged that Muslims women are “used” by men. He said, “In Hindu religion, mothers are given reverence whereas among Muslims, women are treated merely as wives and for giving birth.”
He further stated that Muslim women are forced to give birth to more than 20 children and then divorced later in old-age.
Swami then urged Hindus to never send children to convent schools and Madrasas and opt for Saraswati Vidyalayas instead. He said, “A person will be destined to go to hell if he has too many children. There should be two to three children who should be disciplined.”
His Islamophobic remarks have received massive outrage from members of Muslim community, activists and politicians.
Dr Aslam Qureshi, a social activist remarked, “Swami’s comments are offensive and inaccurate. Islam values women and respects their rights. His claims are completely false.”
Several Muslim activists also noted that Islam honors Muslim women and safeguards their rights.
