KATIHAR – Tension prevailed in Katihar district on Sunday when stones were thrown at a Muharram procession in the Naya Tola area. The incident caused panic among Muslims, and clashes soon followed between two groups.

According to eyewitnesses, trouble began when the Tazia procession reached Naya Tola. Some anti-social elements threw stones at a religious place. This led to a clash between two groups, with people on both sides throwing stones at each other. Amid chants of the Hindu slogan of Jai Shri Ram, a group of people allegedly shouted Islamophobic slogans and threw anti-Muslim slurs, even as the police watched as silent spectators.

“It was a peaceful procession, but suddenly stones came flying. Everyone started running in fear,” said Imran, a resident.

Hindu groups were also blamed for beating up some Muslims and others watching the procession. “They attacked us with sticks. We didn’t even do anything. We were standing there,” said Rahmat, another resident. Several people were injured, and a few vehicles were damaged.

Senior administration officials, including the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, reached the scene. The situation was tense, and police had to work hard to bring it under control. The area was soon filled with police forces to prevent more violence.

Former deputy chief minister and local MLA Tarkishore Prasad also visited the spot and urged the people to stay calm. “Some miscreants beat people during the procession, but now things are peaceful,” he said after meeting with officials.

Following the incident, fear spread among the Muslim community. “We are scared. We don’t want one-sided action from the police. We just want justice,” said a local elder.
