A Dalit wedding procession was allegedly attacked by a group of armed men associated with the “Thakur Samaj” in Sunana village under the Jawan police station limits of Aligarh district, with victims accusing the assailants of caste-based violence and the administration of failing to provide prior protection.
According to members of the wedding party, the attack took place while the procession was underway.
Pawan Kumar, father of groom Anish Kumar, told Maktoob that the complaint submitted to the police has not yet been registered.
He said, “We were going to the bride’s house at around 9 pm yesterday, February 24, when a group of Thakur men attacked the procession and abused us with casteist remarks.”
“They told us, ‘How have you gathered so much courage that you are taking out a baraat procession?’” Kumar said.
He added, “Many of our guests, including the groom, were injured during the attack. We somehow managed to complete the wedding by this morning.”
The family alleged that a group of men armed with country-made firearms, swords, iron rods, and sticks assaulted the procession, chased and beat attendees, fired shots in the air, vandalised the DJ system, and looted valuables from the groom.
