Residents of an apartment complex in Bengaluru confronted a retired army officer and his wife after the couple allegedly used communal slurs against a Muslim resident.
The incident, captured on video, has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion about intolerance and civic responsibility.
According to those present, tensions escalated when the woman reportedly referred to a Muslim man as “Pakistani” and a “terrorist” after learning about his religious identity. This prompted several residents to gather outside the couple’s apartment to express their anger and demand accountability.
In the video, one of the residents can be heard asserting that such behavior would not be tolerated in Karnataka. “This is not your personal space to act without consequence. This is Karnataka,” he said firmly. The elderly man responded by stating that he had served in the Defence Department as an army officer, seemingly attempting to assert authority.
However, the residents pushed back, arguing that his background should reflect a stronger sense of unity and responsibility. “If you were in the army, you should understand patriotism better. How can your wife label someone a terrorist just because they are Muslim?” one resident questioned.
The man attempted to downplay the incident, saying the remarks were made in the heat of an argument and should be overlooked. Despite this, residents emphasized the seriousness of such language and warned against spreading divisive attitudes in what they described as a secular and inclusive community.
They highlighted the diversity within the apartment, stressing that people of all religions live together peacefully. Following continued pressure, the woman eventually issued an apology for her remarks. The residents concluded with a stern warning, stating that any repeat of such behavior would lead to stricter action.
