NEW DELHI — The Ujjain Municipal Corporation has begun removing the upper portion of Husami Masjid, a mosque belonging to the Dawoodi Bohra community near Gopal Mandir in the city’s Chhatri Chowk area, as part of civic works being undertaken ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028.
According to municipal officials, around 8.5 feet of the mosque’s upper structure is being removed. The structure also houses around six to seven shops, officials said, with the work expected to be completed within two to three days.
Municipal Corporation Building Officer Rajkumar Rathore said the action was being carried out with the “mutual consent” of those concerned.
“There was a mosque of the Bohra community in front of the temple, which is being removed by us today with mutual consent,” Rathore said, according to a statement accompanying a video of the civic action.
He said the shops located beneath the mosque were also affected by the work.
The partial removal has, however, raised questions about the precise terms of the alleged agreement and the legal basis for altering the mosque’s structure.
The municipal authorities have described the action as part of development and infrastructure work in the area ahead of Simhastha 2028, one of the country’s largest religious gatherings. However, details of the specific project, including any road-widening plan, municipal order, building approval or other legal document authorising the alteration, have not been made public in the material currently available.
