A 28-year-old pregnant Dalit woman died in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad after police allegedly assaulted her while taking her husband away for questioning in a theft case, prompting the suspension of six personnel, including two sub-inspectors, for negligence.
According to Anjali Verma’s husband, Gaurav Kumar, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Dharmpal Singh arrived at the couple’s home in Labhaua village, under the Shikohabad police station area, at around 11.45 pm on Sunday.
The police had gone to arrest her husband, Gaurav Kumar, in connection with a theft at a local grocery shop.
The family alleged that Anjali, who was around eight-and-a-half months pregnant, pleaded with the officers not to take her husband.
They said that she was pushed or kicked in the abdomen during the ensuing confrontation, causing her to fall. The police subsequently took Gaurav away.
Anjali’s condition reportedly deteriorated after the incident.
She was taken to a government hospital in Shikohabad, where she gave birth to a baby boy on Monday morning. Her health worsened after the delivery, and she was shifted to a private hospital in Firozabad, where doctors declared her dead.
The newborn was in critical condition and was referred to a hospital in Agra for further treatment.
