Two journalists in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, have been booked for reporting on an incident involving a doctor who allegedly refused to treat a pregnant Muslim woman due to her religion—an allegation denied by hospital authorities.
The Kotwali police registered cases against journalists Mayank Srivastava and Mohammed Usman following a complaint by Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) Dr. Mahendra Gupta, who alleged that the journalists forcibly entered the labour room, filmed videos, and damaged hospital property.
The controversy stems from a viral video shared on October 1, in which Shama Parveen, who had gone to the District Women’s Hospital for delivery, claimed that the duty doctor refused to attend to her.
“I will not treat a Muslim woman. I will not conduct your delivery,” the doctor allegedly told Parveen, who said she was not allowed into the operating theatre. Despite her pleas and confrontation, she claimed the doctor ignored her entirely.
Hospital officials, however, strongly denied the accusations.
“Parveen was brought to the hospital around 9:30 p.m. on September 30 for delivery and was examined by the duty doctor,” Dr. Gupta told PTI. “The doctor in question has denied making any religious remark. An inquiry was conducted and higher authorities have been informed,” he added.
The incident quickly took a political turn, with opposition leaders condemning both the alleged discrimination and the police action against the journalists.
