Three Muslim men—a village pradhan, Mohammad Shami, along with his son Saif Ali and a party worker, Traique Ali—were arrested by Kampil police on Sunday, August 17, for allegedly distributing “non-vegetarian biryani” to Hindus in a flood-ravaged village of Farrukhabad district.

According to local residents, large parts of the district have been battling severe flooding for the past week, leaving dozens of families stranded and dependent on relief efforts.

The village pradhan, Mohammad Shami, reportedly coordinated a food distribution drive on Sunday, coinciding with the Janmashtami festival.

Cooked meals and dry rations were handed out to nearly 300 families near a local temple-turned-relief shelter in Raipur Chinghatpur area.

However, soon after, some individuals alleged that Shami had “disrespected religious sentiment” by conducting food distribution during the “sacred observance day” of Janmashtami, accusing him of “violating customary practices” associated with the festival that prohibits non-veg on the ‘sacred day.’
