Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a first information report (FIR) against Samajwadi Party district vice-president Haji Mohammad Usman for offering namaz on a road within the premises of the Circuit House in Moradabad, sparking outrage and questions over whether offering namaz has become “such a grave sin.”

The FIR was registered under Sections 285 and 292 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with danger or obstruction in a public way and public nuisance, respectively.

“Based on the report submitted by the junior engineer in charge of the Circuit House in the Majhola police station area, a case has been registered under relevant sections for offering namaz without authorisation at a public place and affecting traffic. The investigation is ongoing,” said Moradabad City Superintendent of Police Kumar Ranvijay Singh.

A video of the incident, which circulated widely on social media, shows Usman offering prayers behind a parked car.

The FIR was based on a complaint filed by Anit Kumar, an assistant engineer with the provincial division of the Public Works Department in Moradabad.

In his complaint, Kumar alleged that Usman had parked his vehicle on a route used for entering and exiting the Circuit House and offered prayers behind it, causing an obstruction to the movement of vehicles and people.
