A case alleging religious conversion has resurfaced in Bilari town of Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district, raising questions over inconsistencies in police investigation and shifting official positions, after the brother of a Hindu girl filed a fresh complaint accusing her five Muslim classmates of forcibly making her wear a burqa.

The development comes barely a week after Moradabad Police publicly stated that no evidence of religious conversion or criminal activity had been found in the same case.

On January 16, Moradabad Police, in an official post on X (formerly Twitter), said their investigation had revealed that the girl, described as a minor student, had worn the burqa on her own to escape harassment from her brother.

The police further stated that there was no truth to allegations of forced religious conversion, and that legal action was being initiated against those who circulated a viral video accompanied by “misleading allegations”.
