GHAZIABAD — Self-styled cow vigilantes, who often enjoy state patronage as they take the law into their own hands, assaulted a Muslim youth in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district over suspicion that he was transporting beef.

Adding to the victim’s ordeal, police officers who later arrived at the scene took him into custody.

According to undated videos circulating on social media, the incident occurred in the Shastri Nagar area under the Kavinagar police station’s jurisdiction. The videos show Salim surrounded by several men, humiliated, and beaten with sticks and rods in broad daylight.

The incident has prompted outrage on social media and concerns over mob violence in the name of cow protection.

Social media posts alleged that the attackers assaulted Salim before police arrived at the scene. According to the same reports, police later took Salim into custody, seized samples of the meat and sent them for forensic examination. Officials have not yet confirmed the nature of the meat, and laboratory test results are awaited.
