The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear the Kamal Maula Mosque case on Friday after Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi submitted that Muslims had already missed two Friday prayers because the alternate site for offering namaz, as directed by the Court, was located too far from the disputed premises.
Mentioning the matter before a Bench led by the Chief Justice of India, Ahmadi said the alternate site had been provided around two kilometres away.
Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh government, disputed the claim, stating that the site was approximately 900 metres away.
However, Mehta informed the Supreme Court that the Madhya Pradesh government would persuade the administration to identify a location closer to the Kamal Maula Mosque complex for offering Friday namaz.
“I have asked them to identify a nearby site, and the process is going on,” Mehta told the Bench.
The Bench asked Mehta to obtain instructions on the possibility of providing an “adjacent site” for offering namaz and agreed to list the matter for hearing on Friday.
Earlier, the Supreme Court declined to restore Friday namaz at the historic Kamal Maula Mosque complex in Dhar but directed the Madhya Pradesh government to provide an open space adjacent to the site where Muslims could offer Friday prayers between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. while the challenge to the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s order remains pending.
