Nearly four months after police allegedly took Abdul Barek away from his home, his family still does not know where he is, whether he faces any case or whether he remains in India, according to a complaint by human rights activist Kirity Roy seeking urgent intervention and an independent inquiry.

Barek, who earns his livelihood through pisciculture and owns landed property, is the principal breadwinner for a family of approximately 23 members. His unexplained disappearance has left them facing severe uncertainty and financial distress, the complaint said.

Roy, secretary of MASUM and national convenor of PACTI, alleged that personnel attached to Raiganj Police Station/Bhatol Out Post arrested Barek without providing an arrest memo or explaining the grounds for taking him into custody. The complaint also raised concerns over the apparent absence of his arrest from the available police records.

“The family of Mr. Abdul Barek is living in profound uncertainty. Their immediate concern is not merely to establish responsibility but to know a basic and fundamental fact: WHERE IS MR. ABDUL BAREK?” Roy wrote.

According to the complaint, a police party arrived at Barek’s residence in Village Gopalpur, Bailyamor Panupara, at approximately noon on June 2, 2026, and asked for his identity documents. Barek, son of the late Abdul Hakim, and his family cooperated and handed over the documents requested.

The police allegedly took the documents without issuing a receipt and then arrested him in the presence of his family. They allegedly took him to Bhatol Out Post in a police vehicle.

The family was neither given an arrest memo nor told a clear reason for his arrest, the complaint said. His subsequent whereabouts and legal status remain unknown to them.
