Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made controversial statements  during a rally in Aligarh on Tuesday. He claimed that buying foreign products aids terrorism, religious conversion, ‘love jihad’ and Naxalism.

Addressing an event organised by the State’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, Yogi stated that the citizens must prefer ‘swadeshi’ products especially during festivals.

He said, “When one buys a foreign product, the money goes to the foreign which is utilised to fund terrorism, love jihad and conversions which disrupt the harmony of the country.”

He said that the citizens should support PM Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign and gave examples of Aligarh’s traditional lock-making industry. Yogi also praised the ODOP for reviving local manufacturing.

He also noted that prior to 2017, markets in Up had Chinese goods but after the ODOP initiative was brought forth in 2018, local manufacturers benefitted more.

While he also mentioned about maintaining cleanliness in the country and urging the public to participate fully to keep cities clean, his remarks on foreign products aiding terrorism and bringing the love jihad angle have drawn criticism from various political analysts, activists and users on social media. They accused the CM of fueling hatred and radicalising citizens against Muslims.
