A 16-year-old Muslim boy, Rehan, was reportedly assaulted near the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on April 28, following a misunderstanding involving a local woman.
According to Rehan, he was walking near the Dashashwamedh Ghat when his hand accidentally brushed against a woman in the crowd. The woman allegedly mistook the incident as deliberate misbehavior and raised an alarm.
Soon after, a group of locals confronted Rehan, questioning him about his name and religion. Upon learning that he was Muslim, they allegedly dragged him to a nearby temple, where he was brutally beaten with sticks for nearly two hours.
Rehan claimed he was subjected to extreme violence—his nails were pulled out, his fingers were broken, and he suffered multiple other injuries.
Despite the severity of his condition, Rehan managed to return home. His family rushed him to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. The incident has sparked concern over communal tensions and mob violence in the region.
Local police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and stated that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the assault. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits.
The case has drawn public attention, with many demanding justice for Rehan and calling for better protection of minority communities.
