A shocking incident has surfaced from the Yamuna Bazar area of the national capital, Delhi, where a group of Muslims returning from Umrah were allegedly harassed and humiliated by a Hindutva group near a Hanuman temple. The disturbing episode was caught on video, which has since gone viral on social media on September 7th.
According to reports, the pilgrims—identifiable by their beards and caps—were traveling from Delhi to their hometown, Saharanpur, in a mini-bus and had stopped near the temple for food. It was at this point that a group of local youths, allegedly linked to a Hindu nationalist outfit, confronted them. The accused reportedly hurled abuses, forcefully removed their skull caps, and dragged them inside the temple premises, compelling them to bow their heads.
In the video, one of the accused, identified as Siddharth Sharma, is seen in an inebriated state, claiming that some of the passengers had urinated near the roadside, which triggered the confrontation. He can also be heard threatening the bus driver, saying: “This is our temple. I bow my head here, and now I’ll make them do the same.” The footage further shows the group chanting “Jai Shri Ram” while forcing the Muslim travelers into the temple.
Speaking to Maktoob, DCP North District Delhi, Raja Banthia, confirmed the incident and said, “A complaint was given by those who were assaulted yesterday. We have yet to register a complaint.”
However, he said that according to the complainant, the incident took place on August 22nd and only the viral video surfaced on social media yesterday.
