Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Mawana town have registered a case and arrested five people for allegedly putting up a poster that read “I Love Muhammad.” The incident, which occurred late Friday night at the town’s main intersection, sparked protests on Saturday morning after some locals objected to the poster’s display.

According to The Hindu, quoting police officials, the poster was installed without permission at a prominent location in Mawana. As tensions grew, police swiftly intervened to remove the posters and prevent escalation.

Mawana Station House Officer (SHO) Poonam Jadon said a case has been registered based on a complaint lodged by outpost in-charge Manoj Sharma. The accused — identified as Idrish, Tasleem, Rihan, Gulfam, and Haroon — have been booked under Section 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for “making statements conducive to public mischief.”

“All five have been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway,” the SHO said. “Anyone else found involved in the act will also face legal action.”

Following the controversy, additional police forces were deployed across the town as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. Police patrolling has been intensified to prevent the spread of rumours or communal tension.

The district administration has appealed to residents to remain calm, refrain from spreading misinformation, and cooperate with authorities to preserve peace in the area.

Sources said security has been tightened at sensitive points in and around Mawana, with senior police officials monitoring the situation closely.
