A Dalit youngster was brutally assaulted and forced to lick shoes in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district by a group of men belonging to Upper Caste. Reportedly, the accused also tore down a photo of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Umesh Babu who hails from Simnaudi village was assaulted when he went to the market where he was verbally assaulted before the accused turned violent. Abhay Singh and two anonymous individuals abused him with casteist slurs and beat him severely leaving one of his hands fractured.

Despite the victim narrating the ordeal to the police repeatedly, the police failed to register an FIR. Umesh alleged, “I approached the police many times but they ignored me.”

After 12 days had passed, due to the intervention of the Superintendent of Police Dr. Deeksha Sharma, the police finally lodged a complaint against the accused men.

Sumerpur Station House Officer Anup Singh stated, “We have registered a case after receiving a complaint from the victim and an investigation has been initiated.”

Meanwhile, Dalit organisations have condemned the police for failing to register the FIR. They have called for a fair investigation and demanded strict action against the accused and the policemen who denied registration of the FIR.
