Authorities, accompanied by heavy police deployment, carried out a demolition drive over 30 houses in a Muslim-majority area, alleging they were illegal encroachments on cremation ground land. Residents claimed they had lived there for 70–80 years and were left homeless after the demolition. The action followed warnings from the Bhartiya Bajrang Dal, which had threatened a mass agitation from November 17 if the alleged “encroachment” was not removed.
