A 17-year-old Dalit student enrolled at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in B. Thandrapadu, Kurnool, died by suicide on Thursday after what police described as prolonged distress connected to her difficulty with English.
The teenager had reportedly been overwhelmed by the pressure of coping with the language-based coursework and had expressed her fear and frustration repeatedly to her family.
According to the police, the incident occurred when the student went into the institute’s sick room while her friends briefly stepped out. When they returned and found the door locked from inside with no response, staff were alerted, and she was later discovered dead.
A police official confirmed to PTI that she belonged to a Dalit community and was undergoing teacher-training at the institute.
Investigators said the girl had been telling her father for months that she could not keep up with English lessons and felt unable to manage the academic load.
Authorities stated that she had even written that “dying felt easier than learning it,” revealing the depth of her fear of the subject. Despite her repeated pleas, her parents encouraged her to continue classes, hoping she would eventually cope.
Her friends also informed the police that she had been suffering from menstrual health issues, which may have intensified her emotional and physical discomfort while attending the course.
A case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the inquiry is ongoing.
