The family of Ram Narayan Baghel, the Dalit migrant worker who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Walayar after being labelled as a Bangladeshi, along with members of the Action Council, urged the Kerala government to ensure that the investigation into his alleged lynching is not derailed, expedite the probe, and bring all those responsible to justice.
At a press conference held in Thrissur on Tuesday, the family said the court’s finding that the chargesheet filed by the police contained deficiencies pointed to repeated lapses in the investigation.
“The court’s finding that the chargesheet contains deficiencies is testimony to the repeated lapses on the part of the police during the investigation,” they said.
They urged the Kerala government and the police to ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair and error-free manner so that justice is delivered and such a brutal racist lynching is not repeated in the state.
They demanded that the government intervene to speed up the legal proceedings and immediately appoint a Special Public Prosecutor, as requested by the family.
They also called on the police to rectify all shortcomings in the chargesheet already filed before the court and submit a fresh, legally sound chargesheet at the earliest.
The Action Council welcomed the decision of the District-Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee to grant an additional ₹8.25 lakh in compensation to the family, over and above the amount already sanctioned by the government.
The committee took the decision at its meeting on July 2, 2026, after considering an application submitted by Ram Narayan’s mother through the Action Council.
