A 50-year old vendor, Mohammad Athar Hussain, died after succumbing to injuries from a mob lynching in Nawada on December 5. In his dying statement, he alleged that the attackers identified him as Muslim by forcibly pulling down his trousers, then tortured him by breaking his fingers with pliers, standing on his chest, and repeatedly assaulting him. He reportedly named four to five individuals who targeted him solely because of his religious identity. His wife, Shabnam Parveen, filed an FIR naming 10 accused and 15 unidentified persons. Police have so far arrested four accused: Sonu Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar, and Shri Kumar.
