In Aligarh, Hindu Group Pressures Mosque to Stop Azan Loudspeakers

Location: Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh

Members of a Hindu nationalist organization objected to the use of loudspeakers for the call to prayer (azan) at Moti Masjid in Aligarh. The group approached the mosque’s imam and asked him to stop broadcasting the azan, stating that the sound should not be audible outside the mosque premises. The members cited women performing religious chanting (jaap) in the area as the reason for their objection. During the confrontation, a woman affiliated with the group was seen threatening the imam, claiming that the sound of the azan disturbed her. She argued that since temples in the area do not produce loud sounds, mosques should also refrain from using loudspeakers.
