The Cyber Police Station in Siwan district issued an emergency notice to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), seeking the removal of several posts related to the alleged mob lynching of a Muslim youth, claiming the content is “objectionable, misleading and fact-less” and could disrupt law and order.

The notice, dated June 1, was issued under Section 79(3)(B) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

It alleges that posts circulating on X regarding the purported mob lynching were misleading and had gone viral, raising concerns about public order and potential loss of life and property.

The police specifically cited three X posts, including one by Meer Faisal (@meerfaisal001), a journalist with The Oberver Post, who had reported the incident.

According to the notice, a preliminary analysis by investigators found the content to be active on the platform and “prima facie unlawful.”

Meer Faisal posted a photo with a caption that reads, “Disturbingly, in a photo from the scene where Shahzad’s dead body is lying on the ground, a police officer can be seen smiling.”

The killing of 25-year-old Shahzad Ali in Bihar’s Siwan district has sparked outrage. According to Shahzad’s wife, Mobina Khatoon, a group of men arrived at their house, called him outside, and then forcibly took him away. Hours later, the family was informed that he had died.

The notice asks X to immediately block, remove or disable access to the identified posts and accounts.

The police alleged that the posts circulated through X accounts of @meerfaisal001 and another user @abufawaz24, carried “implications of disruption of law and order and potential loss of life and property.”

The notice, shared by Faisal, reads that failure to comply with the notice could result in the loss of intermediary protection available under Section 79 of the IT Act and could attract legal action under Section 84B of the IT Act, 2000 and other applicable laws.
