A 19-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her father inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district on Friday after she reaffirmed her decision to live with the Dalit man she had married against her family’s wishes.

The deceased, Shivani Chauhan, belonged to an OBC community and had recently married Lalit Verma, 20, a Dalit man and her neighbour. According to police, the couple had married at a temple and registered the marriage. They told authorities that they had married of their own free will and produced marriage-related documents.

The incident occurred at the Badausa police station after police recovered the couple following their elopement. Shivani was brought to the station, where officials were preparing to conduct her medical examination and record her statement.

During the proceedings, family members of both Shivani and Verma arrived at the police station. Police said Shivani’s parents repeatedly urged her to return home, but she maintained that she wanted to continue living with her husband.

According to police, as tensions escalated during a counselling session, Shivani’s mother, Ranno, allegedly held her from behind while her father, Satya Kumar Chauhan, 55, attacked her with a knife. Shivani sustained injuries to her abdomen, arm and palm.

She was rushed for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal said a case has been registered under relevant sections of law and the accused father has been arrested.
