On Saturday, June 6, members of the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP)-affiliated group, publicly paraded and humiliated two Muslim men through the streets of Sanjauli in Shimla.
The act was framed as a response to “love jihad,” a contested conspiracy theory alleging systematic conversion of Hindu women by Muslim men through romantic relationships. However, the two men had no connection to the original complaint.
The incident stemmed from a POCSO case filed by the family of a 16-year-old girl against Ubaid, a 22-year-old tailor shop owner from Uttar Pradesh.
Police arrested Ubaid and registered a case under Sections 8 and 21 of the POCSO Act and Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Despite this, Samiti co-convenors Madan Thakur and Vijay Sharma bypassed legal proceedings.
They targeted two unrelated Muslim men from a different shop, dragged them through the market, and publicly shamed them. A video of the incident went viral, showing the men being humiliated while CCTV cameras at the shop were reportedly damaged.
Police confirmed neither man was named in the victim’s complaint. Both were later arrested. On June 7, Samiti supporters blocked the Sanjauli-Shimla road, demanding their release. In a notable development, the victim was reportedly brought forward to support the demand. Authorities warned against spreading misinformation.
