During a protest meeting against “love jihad” and religious conversion, several speakers delivered anti-Muslim speeches while promoting the conspiracy theory of “love jihad”. One speaker threatened that any Muslim residing in a Hindu household must vacate it and warned that those accused of “love jihad” must leave the town within three days or they would be “finished off” before police could take action. Chandrasingh Rawat claimed that 70% of the Kakat caste had converted to Islam and urged attendees to avoid them, alleging that they posed as Rawats, lived in Hindu villages, and took Hindu women away to marry them as Muslims. Another speaker threatened to gouge out the eyes of anyone who targeted Hindu women. Claiming that the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) had received 15 cases of “love jihad” this year, he alleged that marriages between Hindu women and Muslim men increased the number of “enemies” of Hindus. He further claimed that madrasas conspired to target Hindu women, that fixed rates existed for bringing women from different castes, and that mosques protected those accused. Prakash Arya, a Hindu Jagaran Manch leader, also promoted the “love jihad” conspiracy theory. Multiple speakers additionally called for surveillance of Hindu women and urged that they be kept away from mobile phones and social media.
