At a public discourse organised by the Social Justice and Development Trust, BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay delivered an anti-Christian and anti-Muslim speech. He claimed that religious conversion is a national threat, describing it as organised crime, warfare, and terrorism, and demanded that it be prosecuted under the NSA and UAPA, with the seizure of property, cancellation of citizenship, and life imprisonment for those involved. He fear-mongered about demographic change, claiming that demographic shifts had historically led to the fragmentation of India. He peddled the anti-Muslim conspiracy theories of “love jihad” and “land jihad” and alleged that religious conversion, illegal immigration (ghuspaith), and rapid population growth were driving a demographic imbalance. He further blamed corruption for enabling societal evils and unlawful activities such as “halala,” animal smuggling, weapon smuggling, and human traficking. He alleged that madrasas promote “separatism” and “terrorism,” demanded their closure, and questioned the continued existence of madrasas and Christian missionary schools despite the end of Mughal and British rule. He also called for the renaming of places associated with those he described as “vehshi darinde” (brutal predators), claiming that India’s true history had been erased and demanding the establishment of a “Bhartiye Naming Commission.” He further blamed social practices such as child marriage, night marriages, ghunghat, and sati on Mughal influence, arguing that these practices should be abandoned and calling for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code across India.
