Communal unrest broke out after members of Hindu nationalist organisations, armed with lathis and led by Vipin Rajput, went to organise a Hanuman Chalisa recitation while falsely claiming that Islamic flags raised during Muharram were Pakistani flags. During the incident, Vipin Rajput, holding a machete, used loudspeakers to issue warnings and hurl abuses at Muslims residents. The members also attacked people and vandalised property with lathis, while stone-pelting was reported from both sides. Local residents alleged that the police did not intervene to stop the members from engaging in violence.
