In Maheshtala, Hindu Nationalists Force Muslim Property Owner to Leave Locality

Location: Maheshtala, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) members gathered outside a Muslim man’s plot, claiming that a Muslim man purchasing a plot and residing in a Hindu-majority locality constituted “land jihad” and accused him of attempting to change the area’s demographics. They also claimed that CM Suvendu Adhikari had introduced rules preventing non-Hindus from buying property or residing in Hindu-majority areas. Local residents claimed that allowing a Muslim family to live directly opposite a Buddhist monastery would lead to demographic change and demanded that they leave the area. They also called on the authorities, including the state government, to introduce laws restricting Muslims from residing in Hindu- or other religious-majority localities and to take strict action. The man was subsequently forced to leave the locality, and his house was locked.
