In Saharanpur, Authorities Demolish Historic Mosque Over Land Dispute

Location: Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh

Authorities demolished a pre-independence-era mosque located within the District Magistrate’s office complex, alleging it was an illegal construction on government land. The action followed a complaint by former Bajrang Dal provincial coordinator Vikas Tyagi, who alleged the mosque had been illegally constructed within the complex and was being used for commercial purposes. The demolition was carried out within three days of the District Court upholding the City Magistrate’s order terming it illegal. The mosque committee, however, maintained that the property was Waqf land and that the mosque was around 150 years old, citing documents dating to 1911 to support its claim that the mosque predated the Collectorate. Authorities maintained that the committee failed to provide sufficient evidence to substantiate its claim before the court.
