More than 100 shanties were demolished in Surat’s Nasir Nagar settlement during a controversial demolition drive whose responsibility remains disputed. While residents alleged that the Surat Municipal Corporation carried out the demolition, civic authorities denied involvement and claimed their teams were present only for road demarcation. Police officials, however, stated that security had been provided following a request from the municipal corporation. The demolition affected a settlement that residents said had existed for around 35 years and housed approximately 250 families.
