NEW DELHI — A new assessment by the South Asia Justice Campaign (SAJC) has raised serious concerns over violence against Muslims in India, alleged discriminatory state action, demolitions of Muslim religious structures, mass detentions and political rhetoric that, it says, increasingly portrays Indian Muslims as outsiders.
Through its India Persecution Tracker, the organisation has documented incidents involving killings, arrests, detention, alleged custodial abuse, demolitions, forced expulsions and restrictions affecting religious and political rights.
According to figures cited in the latest SAJC assessment covering May to July 2026, 25 Muslims were killed during the three months. The organisation attributes 15 of those deaths to actions involving police or security forces and 10 to alleged attacks by Hindu extremist non-state actors.
SAJC puts the total number of Muslim deaths recorded between January and July at 44, comprising 19 deaths involving government agencies, police or security forces and 25 linked to alleged attacks by Hindu extremist groups.
The figures should not be understood as a complete national death toll. SAJC describes its tracker as a documentation project rather than an exhaustive database. Its methodology draws on media reports, civil-society documentation, testimonies from victims and witnesses, lawyers, journalists and human-rights defenders, with information checked against available documents and through its networks.
The organisation has also warned that many violations, particularly in remote and militarised areas, may never be reported or independently documented.
SAJC says the pace of killings it has documented during 2026 puts the year on course to record the highest number of anti-Muslim hate-crime deaths since it began tracking such killings.
