An elderly Muslim man named Ehsaan from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested within 24 hours after making highly inflammatory remarks against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a television interview.
The incident occurred on May 28, which coincided with Bakrid. While speaking to local news channel True Bharat, Ehsaan referred to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister as “Gunda mukhyamantri” (rowdy chief minister). When asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he escalated his comments by calling Modi the “biggest goon” among them.
When the interviewer described Modi as a “maharaja” (king), Ehsaan retorted, “Maharaja kaha se aaya?” He further stated, “Yeh toh gunda hai. Arre sabse bada gunda hai ye.” The elderly man also took objection to the call for singing Vande Mataram, saying, “Hum se keh raha hai ki Vande Mataram gao. Allah bada, woh Yogi bada thodi koi?” (Allah is the Greatest. Is this Yogi greater than Him?)
A video of the interview went viral on social media, prompting swift police action. On May 29, Meerut Police registered a case against Ehsaan under relevant sections for making indecent remarks against constitutional authorities. He was taken into custody the same day. Police shared a video showing the limping elderly man holding his ears while being escorted by two officers.
The arrest has triggered debate over selective policing. On the same day in Meerut, a Hindu youth named Puneet placed a bag of meat outside his house and filed a false complaint. CCTV footage later exposed his deception, yet police only issued him a warning and let him go without any formal case.
This case highlights growing concerns about differential treatment in law enforcement, where similar provocative actions by members of different communities appear to attract varying degrees of response. The incident has sparked discussions on free speech, public order, and the need for consistent application of law across all sections of society.
