NEW DELHI — Tension and discussion have spread across parts of Uttar Pradesh after recent administrative actions in Moradabad and Meerut involving religious structures and ongoing infrastructure and land-use checks.

In Moradabad, district authorities carried out a demolition drive during the widening of a state highway. Officials stated that a structure identified as a mazar was removed as it fell within the proposed road expansion zone and was considered an obstruction to development work.

The operation was conducted with the presence of administrative teams, police personnel, Public Works Department officials, and municipal staff. Two bulldozers were deployed at the site to complete the demolition process.

A woman associated with the maintenance of the mazar claimed that the action was carried out without prior notice. She said, “This mazar is around 200 years old and we were not informed before it was demolished. I have been staying here since 1975 and this has caused deep distress.”

She further stated that the structure was known locally as the resting place of Syed Sultan Choudhrani Wali, and expressed concern over the sudden nature of the action.

Officials, however, maintained that the demolition was part of a lawful highway widening project aimed at removing encroachments and ensuring road safety and smooth traffic flow.

Meanwhile, in Meerut’s Kharkhauda area, another case has come under review involving a mosque allegedly situated on government or disputed land, according to preliminary reports from revenue assessments.

Police have issued a formal notice to the mosque’s imam, asking him to present ownership documents within seven days. Authorities have also directed that any alleged illegal construction be addressed in accordance with legal procedures.

A police official stated, “The matter is under revenue verification. If documents are not provided within the stipulated time, further action will be taken as per rules.”

The administration has appealed to locals to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours, stating that the situation is being monitored closely to maintain law and order.

At present, both cases remain under official review, with further steps expected after documentation checks and procedural assessments are completed.
