A mob torched the Chibinang market, where most vendors are Bengali-origin Muslims, setting fire to shops and houses. The violence reportedly erupted amid rumours that Muslim candidates were arriving to file nomination papers for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, during which members of Garo community groups also burned political offices and business establishments.
